This trip took us into the Moose River Bow, one of Maine’s classic canoe destinations, for three days of paddling, camping, and exploring with my 10-year-old son, Carter. We didn’t follow the traditional Moose River Bow loop exactly. Instead, we put in at Holeb Landing and took out at Jackman Landing Campground. This slight variation allowed us to avoid the roughly 1¼-mile portage that’s normally part of the traditional loop, which made the trip a little more enjoyable and a better fit for bringing kids along. Even with the modified route, we still got plenty of river, ponds, remote campsites, beautiful scenery, and a true Maine wilderness experience. The Moose River Bow is a great trip for paddlers looking for a manageable multi-day adventure in western Maine. It has a little bit of everything: quiet water, moving river, remote campsites, beautiful scenery, and just enough challenge to keep things interesting. In this video, I’ll take you along for the full trip and show what the route was like, what worked well for us, and why this variation may be worth considering if you’re planning the Moose River Bow with children. Moose River Bow Canoe Trip | 3 Days in the North Maine Woods
In July of 1939, 12-year-old Donn Fendler became separated from his family while descending Mount Katahdin in Maine. What followed became one of the most remarkable survival stories in Maine history. Lost and alone in the wilderness, Donn spent nine days making his way through some of the most remote and rugged country in the state before eventually reaching the East Branch of the Penobscot River. More than 85 years later, I set out to retrace his journey. Starting at Katahdin Stream Campground, I climbed Katahdin and followed Donn’s approximate route across the mountain, through the Northwest Basin, down toward Wassataquoik Stream, and eventually into the country east of Baxter State Park. Along the way, I traveled old trails and tote roads, passed through the abandoned logging settlement known as Old City, bushwhacked through sections of forest, and followed his route toward the East Branch and Lunksoos. This wasn’t intended to be an exact recreation of what Donn endured. I had modern equipment, maps, GPS, food, and the knowledge of where I was going. Donn had none of those things. My goal was simply to experience the landscape for myself and better understand the extraordinary journey a frightened 12-year-old boy somehow survived in 1939. Special thanks to Baxter State Park and Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument for allowing me to undertake this project while respecting the regulations and protections of these incredible places. Donn Fendler’s story has fascinated generations of Mainers, and after traveling through this country myself, I have an even greater appreciation for just how remarkable his survival really was. On February 15, 2015, experienced mountaineer Kate Matrosova set out to complete a winter traverse of New Hampshire’s Northern Presidential Range. She never made it home. In this documentary, I reconstruct Kate’s day using her GPS track, weather data, firsthand interviews, and publicly available information to better understand the decisions, conditions, and circumstances that ultimately led to this tragedy. This film is not intended to sensationalize Kate’s story or assign blame. My goal is to present the available evidence as accurately and respectfully as possible while encouraging thoughtful discussion about decision making in winter alpine environments. A special thank you to Ty Gagne, whose outstanding book, Where You’ll Find Me: Risk, Decisions, and the Last Climb of Kate Matrosova, served as the foundational resource for this documentary. His years of research, interviews, and thoughtful analysis made this project possible. I was also grateful for his willingness to answer several of my questions while I was producing this film. I’d also like to thank Anthony Cormier of Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue (AVSAR) for taking the time to speak with me about the rescue effort and sharing his personal perspective on the lasting impact the incident had on him. Additional information was gathered from Mount Washington Observatory weather archives, public reports, and my own field research conducted along Kate’s route. If you enjoyed this documentary, please consider subscribing. My goal is to continue creating respectful, evidence-based documentaries that explore wilderness incidents and the lessons we can learn from them.
